•The relationship between bond character and work function was studied.•Adding Zr to TiFe alloy led to formation of TiFe2 and Ti2Fe phases.•In the TiFe2 phase, Zr mainly substituted Fe and the work function of the phase increased.•Hydrogen could diffuse into the TiFe2 with Zr rather than a pristine TiFe2.
