•An advanced bipolar tissue sealer provided effective hemostasis in gynecologic, thoracic and colectomy procedures.•The sealer showed an acceptable safety profile across three procedure groups.•The sealer was judged by investigators to show ease of use in terms of hand positioning and firing.
