Complications and subsequent surgery after intra-medullary nailing for tibial shaft fractures: Review of 8110 patients

•One-in-five patients treated with intramedullary nailing of traumatic tibial fractures is affected by anterior knee pain.•Non-union after intramedullary nailing of traumatic tibial fractures occurs in 11% of patients.•18% of patients treated with intramedullary nailing of traumatic tibial fractures undergoes one or more subsequent surgical procedures.
