•A two-years experiment was performed to evaluate sewage sludge (SS) behavior in soil.•Organic matter and nutrients increased in the topsoil after SS application.•Medium and higher doses may replace chemical fertilizers (CFs) in corn fields.•SS has economic advantages under CFs: $2.6 × 106 BRL could be saved yearly.
