Vector competence of Malaysian Aedes aegypti to Zika virus and impact of sequential arbovirus infections

•Malaysian urban Aedes aegypti was susceptible to contemporary Asian Zika virus.•Infectious Zika virus was detected in midguts at 3, 7 and 14 days post-infection.•Infectious Zika virus was detected in head/thorax at 7 and 14 days post-infection.•Mosquitoes were sequentially exposed to dengue virus-2, followed by Zika virus.•No superinfection exclusion was observed.
