Characteristics of the steel-concrete interface and their effect on the corrosion of steel bars in concrete

•Steel-concrete interface in different directions and heights were characterized.•Defect area of steel-concrete interface increased with the higher height.•Interface defect size significantly affected the corrosion initiation time of steel bars.•Chloride permeability of concrete was non-uniform at different casting heights.
