The impact of Medicaid expansion on access to care and preventive care for adults with diabetes and depression

•There is a high prevalence of diabetes and depression, and their associated complications, in the United States.•Medicaid expansion is a key mechanism for increasing access to care and use of preventive services for the chronically ill.•Little work has been done to analyze associated changes in access and utilization for persons with diabetes and depression.•Findings show Medicaid expansion significantly improved access to care for Medicaid eligible respondents in expansion states.•Medicaid expansion reduced cost barriers which can lead to reduced financial stress and improved mental health.
