Coupled groundwater surface water level modelling on a global scale

Water table elevations are reflected in both groundwater and surface water levels, making it essential to model these together. Here we present a simple approach for coupled modelling of the water table (groundwater and lake/wetland surfaces) and its changes through time. Our model requires as inputs topography, climatic data (precipitation minus evapotranspiration and winter temperature), and an approximation of the hydraulic conductivity profile. The output is water-table elevation, comprising both groundwater and surface water.
