•COD removal efficiency of BES-based TF reactor reached 97% at 1.0 g-COD/L/day.•Effluent TN discharge was <113 mg/L and below legal limit of 120 mg/L/day.•Geobacter caused current generation in biofilms with columbic efficiency of 11%.•Bacterial groups for COD decomposition, nitrification, and denitrification found.•One-step reactor treats wastewater with energy efficiency and no sludge production.
