•Tyrosol, 2-hydroxyphenethyl alcohol and 3-hydroxyphenethyl alcohol deactivated different ROS.•Systems substrates/commercial antioxidants exhibit a synergistic antioxidant effect.•2-hydroxyphenethyl alcohol showed antimicrobial activity against E. coli and S. aureus.
