The structure and subtypes of gambling activities: Genetic, psychiatric and behavioral etiologies of gambling frequency

•We applied novel methods to complex gambling behavior data.•These methods demonstrated reproducible findings across samples.•We found multiple gambling dimensions and subtypes and clarified their etiologies.•Gambling activities shared etiologies but skill gambling had distinct mechanisms.•Behavioral, psychiatric and genetic associations differed by gambling traits.
