•Human MDM can be used as a robust in vitro model to study their transcriptome with different stimuli.•Corneal tissue induces metallothioneins in MDM with potential immune-modulatory effects.•Corneal endothelial cells do not induce transcriptional alterations in MDM.•There is a significant donor-dependent effect on the transcriptome of MDM.
