The Value of Surgical Coaching Beyond Training

Surgical coaching is growing in popularity as a meaningful strategy for surgeons’ professional development. Often, other existing forms of continuous professional development for surgeons, including didactic sessions, simulation courses, or self-study [1], are limited as one-time events that are not individualized and have minimal follow-up [2,3]. Surgical coaching aims to close this gap by establishing a dedicated setting for practicing surgeons to focus on individual performance improvement throughout one’s entire career [4,5].
