摘要
Sustainability is crucial in the business world, however, sustainability assessment methods based on an understanding of the business-environment relationship are lacking. This study developed a stepwise, cyclic approach employing a multi-dimensional decision-making method and applied it to assess the sustainability of cruise-industry development in Xiamen, one of the leading cruise homeports in China. This assessment addressed five dimensions, namely economic, social, resource, environmental, and ecological. Based on multi-dimensional assessments of regional socioeconomic characteristics, the natural environment, industry development, and the interactions between them, we found that Xiamen offers appropriate conditions for sustainable cruise-industry development. However, the development of the hinterlands is limited; thus, we suggest highlighting local resources through itinerary designs, supporting the development of the hinterlands, conserving natural resources, and minimizing the ecological impacts of cruise ship repair and maintenance. This approach to assessment can systematically and effectively promote sustainability-oriented decision-making within the cruise industry.
