•A novel experimental setup is built to study coupled heavy oil upgrading-recovery.•Chemical markers proved the importance of nano-catalyst in hydrogenation reactions.•Due to in-situ catalytic hydroprocessing reactions, light hydrocarbons are produced.•Upgraded products in the ISUT process act as solvents to enhance heavy oil recovery.
