Effects of vegetation on the distribution of soil water in gully edges in a semi-arid region

•Quantifying the soil water distribution at different locations in the gully edge.•Soil water storage decreased with proximity to the gully edge under no vegetation.•Soil water depletion was severe in shrublands on the gully banks in wet season.•Grasslands should be closely considered for revegetation on the gully banks.
