•CSTRHi-CSTRT showed high VS removal rate, solubilization percentage and CH4 yield.•CSTRHi-CSTRM showed low VFAs accumulation and energy consumption, and good methanogenic potential.•The relationship between process performance and microbial interaction in CSTRHi-CSTRT and CSTRHi-CSTRM was proposed.
