•Fe in oxidized tailings was transformed to magnetite through low-T magnetization.•Cu and Ni contaminants accumulate in the magnetic fraction.•Ni behaves as structurally incorporated into magnetite, while Cu is loosely bound.•The final waste volume is reduced and has lower potential for metals leaching.
