Assessing water storage changes of Lake Poyang from multi-mission satellite data and hydrological models

•Water storage was estimated by multi-mission satellite data and hydrological models.•MODIS imagery and in situ water levels provide reasonable estimates of lake water storage changes.•GRACE observation and global hydrological modeling is insufficient to estimate accurate water storage for Poyang Lake.
