•A decomposition-based method for optimally deploying grid-balancing plants.•Power-to-x-to-power pathways evaluated for H2, CH4, CH3OH, syngas and NH3.•Power-to-x efficiency (53–69%) ranks as CH4> CH3OH > NH3 > H2 > syngas.•X-to-power efficiency (66–80%) ranks as syngas > H2> CH4> CH3OH > NH3.•Round-trip efficiency (38–48%) ranks as CH4> syngas > H2> CH3OH > NH3.
