Optimizing the split of N fertilizer application over time increases grain yield of maize-pea intercropping in arid areas

•Maize/pea intercropping requires adapted N fertilizer management.•The ameliorated N management practice achieved NNI near 1.•The nodulation advantage of pea and compensatory intensity of maize were all improved.•An increase of yield components of pea and maize enhanced the system productivity.
