Model predictive control for supervising multiple rooftop unit economizers to fully leverage free cooling energy resource

•Shown that thermostat controls for multiple RTUs inefficiently operate economizers.•MPC that optimally operates economizers for open space buildings is proposed.•A CFD-coupled model was developed/validated for the control evaluation.•Significant energy savings up to 35% was achieved by the proposed MPC.
