•This is the first study to explore the influence of prenatal rare earth elements exposure on premature rupture of membranes.•Maternal exposure of rare earth elements was related to the increased risk of premature rupture of membranes.•The risk of preterm premature rupture of membranes was stronger among male infants than female infants.
