Balancing good oxygen balance and high heat of formation by incorporating of -C(NO2)2F Moiety and Tetrazole into Furoxan block

•A new tetrazo-furoxan hybrid with good oxygen balance is prepared via facile methods.•Hydrogen bonds, short contacts, and π-π interactions play a key role in the formation of 3D packing.•Combination of oxygen-rich -C(NO2)2F and nitrogen-rich tetrazole leads to superior detonation performances.•The fascinating properties make it attractive in the application of high-performing explosives.
