HD-Scatter: Improving the Hardware Design of Advanced Backscatter System

Backscatter does not require any transmission op-wer, making passive communication possible. This paper designs a platform that can send and receive digital signals. The platform does not need any power supply to complete these functions. In addition, a 915MHZ in-board high-frequency antenna is designed to make the whole platform smaller, lighter and cheaper. The main challenge in designing the platform is how to receive high-frequency signals without power and demodulate voice or digital signals. In order to solve this problem, we designed an on-board antenna that can receive 915MHz high-frequency signals and provided a method to optimize the matching network. It differs from conventional matching network which suffers from the extremely high dynamics of the dioxide values in high frequency. Instead we isolate the antenna and the dioxide design part, and adjust each part individually. After that, we put it together to improve the network design gradually. The experimental results show that through our optimization method, the communication distance of the node can reach more than 5m, and the minimum power consumption of the node is only a few microwatts.
