An AIC-based approach to identify the most influential variables in eco-efficiency evaluation

•An AIC rule based variable selection approach for eco-efficiency evaluation is proposed.•This approach investigates any possible variable set generated from all potential variables.•A real data set on 30 China provinces’ industrial systems is used to demonstrate the proposed approach.•The most influential variables in eco-efficiency evaluation can be determined with robustness.
