•Levitation-jet aerosol synthesis of TiNx-TiOy nanoparticles (NPs).•Room-temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM) in the NPs (magnetization up to 0.14 emu/g).•Dependence of maximum saturation magnetization of the NPs on N/O ratio.•Correlation between RTFM evolution and XPS peak areas of core-levels O 1s and N1s.•A temporary “turn-off” effect of magnetization in hysteresis loops of some NPs.
