•BpHMG genes can respond to three abiotic stresses (salt and osmotic) and hormone treatments (ABA).•BpHMG6 over-expression increased ROS - scavenging capability and antioxidant enzymes activities.•BpHMG6 could effectively enhance the tolerance of transgenic birch to salt stress.
