A meta-analysis of the effects of tree retention on shrubland birds

•Shrubland bird densities declined with increasing tree retention for most species.•A small proportion of species exhibited quadratic relationships with tree retention.•A few putative shrubland birds had no relationship with basal area retention.•Low to moderate tree retention provides habitat for shrubland birds.
