•The preferred core conceptual design of PB-AHTR is proposed.•Evacuating molten salt is more beneficial to the engineering realization.•Batch loading scheme is easier to be controlled, but more complex to operation.•Enough fast shutdown margin can be gained by increasing the second control rods.•Shutdown margins of both the two shutdown systems meet the design requirements.
