•Tart cherry has been found to reduce inflammation associated with a variety of diseases including CVD, cancer, and arthritis.•Tart cherries contain many active compounds that may contribute to their anti-inflammatory effects.•The active compounds in tart cherry and some of their metabolites can affect inflammatory signaling pathways.•The metabolites of tart cherry may also affect the inflammatory pathways.•Tart cherry consumption may reduce the risk for inflammatory disease.
