•The overexpression of OsACBP4 protects rice and Arabidopsis from salinity stress.•OsACBP4pro::GUS expression was induced after salt treatment of rice seedlings.•Salinity-responsive elements in OsACBP4pro bind rice nuclear proteins.•Recombinant OsACBP4 binds long-chain acyl-CoA esters including C18:0- and C18:1-CoA.
