•Matrix metalloproteinase enzymes group are important in development of endometriosis.•MMP-2 variations show inconsistent association with development of endometriosis.•MMP-2 −1575 G has significant association with susceptibility to endometriosis.•MMP-2 -735C/T variant showed no association with endometriosis in Iranian population.
