•Agronomic traits and bioactive compounds contents were varied greatly with 17 genotypes of Rubus chingii Hu.•Suitable genotypes of early, medium and late flowering or fruit ripening were selected out.•Outstanding genotypes with higher fruit qualities, pharmaceutical values, or economic yields were screened out.
