•The most commonly prescribed antiepileptic drugs was diazepam (74.8 %).•Other drugs included phenobarbital, valproic acid, fosphenytoin, and carbamazepine.•Carbamazepine caused the highest rate of ADRs (1.4 %).•Most ADRs were associated with older generation antiepileptics (84.4 %).•Identifying ADR risk is critical for prevention after administration of antiepileptics.
