•PDMS-based canine training aids were compared to 1g of TATP using DART-MS.•Results are discussed in the context of three odor release phases.•The PDMS-based training aid behaved most similarly to 1g TATP with restriction lid.•The PDMS-based training aids produced reproducible signals between samples.
