•We model a stand-off between a predator and its prey.•We embed the stand-off as an integral part of a full population dynamical model.•We use adaptive dynamics to study the long-term coevolution of the giving-up rates.•Our results differ from the asymmetric war of attrition in game theory.•The mechanistic approach plays a key role.
