Prevalence and factors associated with depressive and anxiety symptoms in a Chinese population with and without cardiovascular diseases

•Depressive and anxiety symptoms were prevalent in the general population of China.•A higher proportion of patients with CVDs comorbid with mental health symptoms.•Prevalence of mental health symptoms increased with the number of CVDs increased.•Those being young, female, unmarried, with low income, AF, HF, and stroke need psychological evaluation.
