Brush assisted layer-by-layer assembled lignin/polyelectrolyte membrane

•A brush assisted assembly was developed for the large-scale membrane fabrication.•This report favors developing lignin as a rawmaterial for membrane fabrication.•The membrane exhibits good permeability and retentions to multivalent salts.•The membrane shows excellent fouling resistance and performance stability.
