•Midlatitude VTEC correlated with EEJ, latitudinal extent of O/N2, neutral wind and station location.•Prolonged plasma transport in June 2015 was due to equatorward wind, intense Joule heating and high ionospheric conductivity.•Cases when GUVI O/N2 did not correlate with VTEC can be explained by plasmaspheric contributions.
