•Most of the organic phosphorus in NaHCO3-extract was hydrolyzed by phosphatases.•Monoester P was dominant in phosphatase-labile organic phosphorus in all soils.•Both phytate-like P and DNA-like P significantly increased with decreasing soil pH.•DNA-like P significantly increased as total C increased.
