Application of Digital Image Analysis Methods for Quantifying Spatiotemporal Neural Dynamics from Planar Microelectrode Arrays

Recent developments in the ability to measure neural activity including surface and penetrating microelectrode arrays have allowed for higher-resolution and higher-dimension measurements of neural activity. With the development of this technology also arises the need for analytical methods to enable interpretation of these measurements in the context of underlying neural dynamics and processes. In this paper, we examine the application of methods such as current source density (CSD), histogram correlation, and radial profile analysis for quantifying the spatiotemporal characteristics of neural dynamics in both simulated and recorded local field potential (LFP) data.
