•The Co NPs/NS-CNTs derived from ZIF-67 was prepared by a simple pyrolysis method.•The hybrid catalyst created abundant active sites, showing highly large surface area.•The catalyst displayed excellent catalytic activity and stability for the ORR.•The assembled Zn-air battery offered high power density and long-term durability.
