Use of extended-release and immediate-release anti-seizure medications with a long half-life to improve adherence in epilepsy: A guide for clinicians

•Poor adherence to epilepsy medications is associated with break through seizures.•Some regimens are associated with adherence rates as low as 40%.•Extended/immediate-release drugs with long half-lives allow for once-daily dosing.•Other benefits are simple dosing, fewer pills, and steady serum drug concentrations.•We review the pharmacokinetics and benefits of long half-life epilepsy drugs.
