•Understanding of local and remote biochemical changes induced by traumatic brain injury can help to prevent its later pathological effects.•Analysis of brain tissue using the methods of vibrational spectroscopy allowed to detect significant biomolecular anomalies resulting from the process of glial scarring.•Significantly decreased accumulation of lipids as well as compounds containing phosphate and carbonyl groups and the elevated levels of proteins and cholesterol/cholesterol esters were found within the injury site.
