Combining molecular and geographical data to infer the phylogeny of Lamiales and its dispersal patterns in and out of the tropics

•Molecular sequences were mined from GenBank, and 6,910 species of Lamiales sampled.•Distribution data was mined from GBIF, and 12,214 specimens of Lamiales sampled.•Phylogenetic results recovered Lamiales and internal families as monophyletic.•In and out of the tropics transitions were observed in Lamiales.•Most of the transitions occurred from extratropical to the tropical regions.
