Mechanism of a new photosensitizer (TBZPy) in the treatment of high-risk human papillomavirus-related diseases

•The new photosensitizer TBZPy shows excellent photodynamic performance.•TBZPy-photodynamic therapy (PDT) was tested in HPV-infected HeLa cells.•TBZPy-PDT promoted apoptosis and reduced mitochondrial membrane potential.•TBZPy-PDT downregulated the expression of HPV E6/E7 proteins.•TBZPy-PDT shows potential for the treatment of HPV-related diseases.
