•Normalizing EMG to maximal isometric contraction is difficult in pediatric.•In Cerebral Palsy, a more natural, objective and feasible method is highly needed.•Normative plantar flexors EMG from heel rise are larger than maximal isometric.•The cocontraction index scaled from heel rise offers robust estimates during gait.•Spastic cocontraction assessment, prescription and treatment could be strengthened.
