Subtypes of smokers in a randomized controlled trial of a web-based smoking cessation program and their role in predicting intervention non-usage attrition: Implications for the development of tailored interventions

•Person-centered approach was used to understand intervention non-usage attrition.•Three subtypes of smokers were found in an RCT of a web-based smoking intervention.•The three subtypes of smokers differed on a broad range of characteristics.•The three subtypes of smokers also differed on non-usage attrition patterns.•Intervention tailoring suggestions were provided for future research.
