Towards The Integrated Management Of Information ? A Case Study Of Factors Contributing To The Integration And Differentiation Of Information Functions In A Government Organisation

This article presents the results of an exploratory and descriptive examination whose objective was a better understanding of the phenomenon of integrated management of information within an organisation, namely the federal government, who officially adopted an information management policy. A closer examination of the information policies of the federal government indicates a fragmented approach to information management in spite of a clear desire for integration. An analysis of the organisational charts of 19 departments illustrates a trend towards integration of the various information functions associated with technological management and informational content, excluding the communication function. This trend was observed within the same organisational structure. Other than a shared organisational structure, the case study of a governmental organisation reveals that the information functions are markedly differentiated, are rarely interdependent and demonstrate limited integration.
